A Pen, Guin and Me Selfie

031

Meet my new furiends Pen and Guin. We were all set to go to the annual Penguin Plunge event on New Years Day this year and then found out it got cancelled. Apparently on New Years Eve day, a boat with a wooden hull had sprung a leak and started sinking. The skipper decided to head for shallower waters so it wouldn’t sink very deep. Unfortunately that was the boat launch at Rocky Point Park here in Port Moody where hundreds of humans gather to take a traditional dip in the frigid sea water to start the new year.

We were all very disappointed, and instead of spending a very beautiful but cold and somewhat foggy day on the water with the other silly humans wearing silly penguin hats, we spent most of the day in our land home, doing nothing. We could have gone to another Penguin Plunge event that was scheduled a couple of hours later in another community about twenty minutes away by boat, but Minstrel has recently developed a mysterious electrical problem and unless the generator is running, we have no power coming into the boat. The generator is louder inside the boat than out, and that was the last thing we needed to hear after a late night of “ringing in” the new year.

Pen and Guin usually stay outside the house in their light-up hot air balloon during the Christmas season, but before they left to go back to their home at the south pole, I took advantage of a rare indoor moment to get a selfie with them. They’ll be back again next December.

My True Blue Selfie

IMG_4642

True blue
True blood
Blood stains
Blood on hands
Hands over fists
Hands holding weapons
Weapons of destruction
Weapons in secret
Secret locations
Secret agents
Agents of doom
Agents of injustice
Injustice is served
Injustice is hard
Hard reality
Hard hit
Hit hard
Hit a target
Target practice
Target the innocent
Innocent lives lost
Innocent not guilty
Guilty of what
Guilty for being human
Human kind
Human race
Race of life
Race to end
End the madness
End the hatred
Hatred does not cease hatred
Hatred is ceased by love
Love thyself
Love heals wounds
Wounds that run deep
Wounds of war
War torn
War is hell
Hell on earth
Hell of a time
Time to change
Time is of the essence
Essence of trust
Essence to let
Let go of fear
Let us pray
Pray for peace
Pray for Paris
Paris…
Peace…

Poetry 101 Day 9: As temperatures begin to drop in the Northern Hemisphere, let’s focus our attention today on “cold,” and whatever that word evokes in you. Write a poem that will send chills down our spines (literally or not). Our form was to be a concrete poem but I changed it to a Blitz Poem, a poetry form created by Robert Keim. This form of poetry is a stream of short phrases and images with repetition and rapid flow. There should be no punctuation. When reading a BLITZ, it is read very quickly, pausing only to breathe. Find out more about it at Shadow Poetry. The device is anaphora/epistrophe which coincidentally is part of this form by design. Anaphora simply means the repetition of the same word (or cluster of words) at the beginning of multiple lines of verse in the same poem. Epistrophe is its counterpart: the repeated words appear at the end of lines. Like most simple devices, though, the trick is in deploying them to their full effect. Repetition lends emphasis to words, adds weight, and leaves a deeper imprint in your readers’ memories.

Big-Eyed Selfie

Big eyed,
On something you
Have spied.

A sound,
Your attention
Has found.

Hurry,
A pose, take the
Selfie!

The Musette, created by Emily Romano is a poem that consists of three verses of three lines each. The first lines have two syllables; the second lines have four syllables, and the third lines have two syllables. The rhyme scheme is a/b/a for the first verse; c/d/c for the second verse, and e/f/e for the third verse. The title should reflect the poem’s content

First Santa Ships Selfie

053
This weekend we had our first Santa’s Christmas Ships parade and all went very well. The weather couldn’t have been more purrfect for cruising at night. I was helping mom get the boat all decorated and everything was looking very festive for our guests until those pesky black crows showed up! Wait, who invited them?! I defended the inside of the boat as best I could, but the Christmas village on the dash suffered a little.

I got to spend the whole weekend on the boat and enjoyed our Santa Ship’s cruise very much. Friday night we had about 14 ships, and on Saturday night twelve ships cruised up Indian Arm into Bedwell Bay, one of our favourite weekend anchorages, and was met with a show of fireworks from the landlubbers who showed their appreciation for our presence which we appreciate immensely too.

Ornamental Selfies

Yesterday we starting decorating Minstrel for our annual Santa’s Christmas Ships cruise. More on that in the coming weeks. I told mom she should use the circle gallery type this time because they make my selfies look like Christmas tree ornaments. She likes the way they look so much that she’s actually going to print a few and hang them on the tree! Hope your Sunday is an easy one too.

Being My Selfie

Just Being My Selfie

Being My Selfie

This is called being my selfie,

In it I capture what you see,

When I stage my own photo shoot.

 Hope it’s not too self-indulgent,

 To revel in my element,

On such a self-centered pursuit.

The camera’s held at arm’s length,

Looking casual is my strength,

I strike the pose, hey ain’t I cute.

My Halloween Selfie Furiend

Meet my new Halloween furiend “Boocat”. His eyes are so golden, and he has a purrfect arch. He’ll be great in the door side window to greet the little trick or treaters. It’s a good day to get a few props out before Friday. We usually get quite a few of the little human monsters, and last year due to the nice weather we had about 150. I had to send my humans to the store to get some more candy after we ran out at a hundred. This year they say it should be nice again, so we are getting prepared!

Flavourites of Kittenhood

Writing 101 Day 10, Today, be inspired by a favorite kittenhood meal. For the twist, focus on infusing the post with your unique voice — even if that makes you a little nervous.

IMG_5966

My earliest memory is of a not so inspiring kittenhood meal that consisted of some kind of a wet meaty slurry and a bowl of water. About a month later, the slurry became more solid and was joined by another bowl containing little bites of crunchy food. We called them crunchies because kibble sounded a little too dog. Turkey, chicken, beef and fish, my palate was well diversified, and well, still is. Once in a while my human mom would give me a tiny bowl of milk as she had done for all her previous kittens and cats, but then she was “advised” that cows milk was bad for us. I didn’t have a problem digesting it but she didn’t want to take any more chances even though her cat Coco had lived for 18 years supplemented with cows milk now & then.

My humans would be away all day, so being more nocturnal than diurnal, I mostly slept during that time. They’d play with me in the evening, but when they went to bed, I’d be still be wide awake. I tried to sleep with them but after getting rolled on or kicked off the bed once too many times, I ventured back down to the basement and there I learned to hunt. Now being an indoor cat you’d wonder what I would hunt for. Bugs! You’d be surprised how many bugs would come out of the wood work in the dark. I didn’t have to go outside, they came in. Bugs are like vitamins. Spiders, moths, earwigs etc.  Some tasted better than others, but they were all fun to try to catch. Another odd food that I like is lettuce and grass. My human dad would say I’m my mom’s cat because she likes her greens too.  My dad’s not much of a green food guy at all.

I was about 2 months old when a special little bag of food appeared. Hard’n crunchy outside, soft’n meaty inside. Meowee, they were de-lish.  They were so special that they’d be hand fed to me. She’d get a handful of those treats, ten to fifteen of them, and sit with me on the floor in a separate room from anyone else. Just the two of us. It was a special time, our time. Treat, click, treat, click, treat, click.  She called it “charging the clicker” which was teaching me that the clicker meant treats. Those treats combined with the clicker inspired me to learn my tricks. I’d do anything they asked of me. Any flavour too, it didn’t matter.  This would continue for about ten minutes, one or two times a day, for a few days. That was it, I got it. Three months later I had learned 4 tricks: Sit, shake a paw, high five, and sit up. It didn’t matter anymore either who asked me to do the tricks, just as long as they had those or any treats. I’d do them for people food too. Steak and roast chicken were a big favourite. Then, when I was about 7 months old the ultimate treats started, but those are stories for another day. Excuse me now while I make this bowl of Mariner’s Catch disappear, nom nom nom nom! =^,,^=

Mom took this picture of me because I was too young to do it myself.

Me Myselfie & I

IMG_3832

My first selfies. I don’t mind the camera in my face as long as the flash doesn’t go off which aside from blinding me, makes my eyes glow red and is not very attractive, so we’ll stick to well lit areas as much as possible. The first two are on the boat before and after the windows got the salt water washed off, and we used the Canon digital camera. The third one was taken inside at night with the iphone which is why it’s a bit grainy even facing a bright ceiling light, but these days there is probably a filter to make it look like this anyways, so we used it. Here’s looking at you kits! Continue reading
